Question:

How can I find if there are any unclaimed funds owed to me?
-YussefDonaldson

Answer:

Funny you should ask. I just came across a website, www.unclaimed.org, that’s run buy the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. The home page contains a map that allows you to link to the department in each state and a handful of Canadian provinces that handles unclaimed property cases. Financial institutions and other organizations often have clients that they have lost track of over the years. Either by law or choice, they will turn over assets held in these dormant accounts to the relevant governmental department so that they can be disbursed to the rightful owners should they make claims. It actually works, although not for me. I checked the claims departments in the four states in which I have hung my hat over the decades. Alas, there is not a penny coming my way, but I discovered that two relatives are owed about $130 between them. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing and, I’m sure, more than they expected. Give it a whirl. You never know.
